Modern food has drifted a long way from real food.
Our grandparents would barely recognise today’s supermarket.
Shelves are packed with ultra-processed meals, questionable ingredients, and products designed for shelf life instead of nutritional value.
Finding food that’s genuinely fresh, seasonal, and thoughtfully produced feels like searching for a needle in a haystack.
At Moxie Farms, we do things differently.
We believe healthy food starts long before it’s on your plate. By growing, raising, baking, and preparing food within one regenerative system, we’re able to produce food that’s better for the land – and better for the people eating it.
Tucked into the rolling hills around Smithville Lake (near Kansas City, Missouri), and surrounded by thousands of acres of nature, we have been providing a secure, year-round food source to our members for over 20 years now.
“Eating is an agricultural act”
— Wendell Berry, "The Pleasures of Eating", 1989

A year’s worth of groceries
Members pay ahead for a full year’s worth of groceries. We’ll help you choose the amount that matches your family’s average consumption, and this upfront payment becomes usable credit.
This ranges from $5000/year (a little over $400/month) for couples without kids at home, to $15,000/year (the equivalent of $1250/month) for families that want a fully stocked freezer and more prepared meals.
The upfront payment means food security throughout the year – even during nationwide shortages or when the local farmers market is sold out.
A farm that grows around your family
When you become a member, we’ll ask you all about your family’s needs and preferences. What everyone loves (or refuses) to eat, whether you cook from scratch or lean on ready-made meals, and any allergies or dietary requirements.
We’ll then grow the food you want to put on the table; plant extra tomatoes if your family loves salsa, or keep more laying hens if you eat eggs. Looking for prepared foods without certain additives? We can accommodate that too.
That first chat about dietary preferences becomes an ongoing conversation: we’re always happy to answer questions about the food, adjust recipes to fit your needs, or share cooking tips and recipes.
Most of our members have been with us for over 10 years, and they all agree: the longer you're with us, the better we get at feeding your family.

Frequently Asked Questions

Most farm shares (or CSAs) work the same way: every week you pick up whatever was harvested that week. Everyone gets roughly the same box, whether you like everything in it or not. That's great if you're happy to cook around whatever turns up, but it also means food often goes to waste.
At Moxie Farms, you order what you actually want. If your family eats lots of carrots but no beets, that's what you order. If someone has allergies or follows a specific diet, you don't have to swap things with your neighbors or throw food away.
We're also open year-round. Most CSAs run through the growing season and stop for winter. Thanks to our greenhouses and year-round farming, you can keep getting food from the farm throughout the year.
Last but not least, we offer so much more than raw food. You can order fresh produce, meat, eggs, dairy products, prepared foods, and even ready-made meals. Instead of visiting several farms or stores to find all the food your family needs, you can get almost everything from one place.

We regularly prepare foods for people following GAPS, Keto, Whole30, the Specific Carbohydrate Diet (SCD), gluten-free diets, WAPF, sugar-free, and a number of other dietary approaches.
We’ll ask you about allergies, intolerances, dietary goals and preferences when you first become a member. That helps us grow produce you actually want - and prepare meals and other foods that work for your diet.

Waiting time depends on when a slot opens up.
Most of our members stay with us for a long time (often 10 to 12 years). But occasionally, someone moves away, their circumstances change, or we've expanded our operation and can accommodate a couple of extra families.
If you're interested, the best thing to do is apply. We'll let you know what availability looks like at that time.

This is not at all like an ordinary CSA; you won’t get a box of pre-selected produce to take home. Instead, we let you know what’s available every week (from fresh veggies to freezer meals); you then decide what you need that week.
Right now, all food needs to be ordered through our online ordering system before pickup. We harvest and prepare your order specifically for you, so everything is ready when you arrive.
We're also working on a members-only farm shop; once that's open, members will be able to browse and ask questions before deciding what to take home.
Most of our members order and pick up food weekly or every other week, but we can accommodate special schedules as well - get in touch if you’d like to see how this could work for you.
-
Members can pick up their order every week on Friday between 9am and 6pm, or Saturday between 9am and 11am. If those times don't work, just let us know - we're happy to arrange another pickup time when possible.
Many members make pickup part of their week. Some grab their food and head home, while others stay for a while, have lunch, catch up with the farmers, or enjoy a bit of time on the farm.
-
Membership credit doesn't roll over into the following year.
To help avoid leftover credit, we'll recommend the right membership level for your household when you join, and you can check your remaining balance at any time through the online ordering system.
We also encourage members to order and pick up food regularly rather than saving their credit.
If you do have a little credit left, it's usually easy to use. Most members stock up on freezer-friendly foods, add a few prepared meals, or treat themselves to something extra before the year ends.
